WatchWatch
This is a rough version of the pilot to Ronald D. Moore’s 17th Precinct, which did not get picked up for series.  I have only seen the cold open, but plan on watching the rest later, as io9. really enjoyed it.  I strongly disliked the opening narration, although I get the feeling that it was inserted to appease network heads who think that people won’t be able to put things together...

Cowboy Bebop Session 15: My Funny Valentine
Who is Faye Valentine?  Since her introduction way back in “Honky Tonk Women,” we’ve learned almost nothing about who she is or where she comes from, save her claim that she is descended from the Romani.  Although, seeing as how she is a bit of a liar and a cheat, and that she made the claim as part of a desperate plea for freedom, the truthfulness of the claim has always been in question.  What...

Basic Introduction To Common Popular Culture
I saw this post by Samaralex in my dashboard today: To me, there is no other answer to the question “what are you doing today/tonight” than what she said.  Obviously, her coworkers need some sort of collection of works to introduce them to commonly used pop culture references.  What would be included, though?  I love Battlestar Galactica and Veronica Mars, but are they widespread...

George R.R. Martin Previews A Chapter From The... →
George R.R. Martin has released a rough version of an early chapter from the sixth book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, The Winds of Winter.  Martin explains the chronology here, stating that it occurs a few chapters before the end of A Dance with Dragons.

Damon & Alaric: Together Forever →
I realized that I had not yet seen a Tumblr dedicated to the badass bromance team of Damon Salvatore and Alaric Saltzman, so I decided to look one up.  Fortunately, it exists.

Congress Guilty of Online Piracy →
I know this isn’t how SOPA works, but wouldn’t it be kinda great if Congress had to shut itself down for violating the bill?  It’s not like anything gets done when they are in session (except potentially SOPA getting passed).

io9. Lists 10 Science Fiction Movies For People... →
Overall a pretty solid list.  But how could they include The Truman Show but not Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind?!  I’d say that the technology in Truman Show is not too far-off from the real world, whereas Eternal Sunshine has a mind-erasing machine!  And Eternal Sunshine does everything the film version of Total Recall tried to do about memories, only a million times better.

Cowboy Bebop Session 14: Bohemian Rhapsody
Coming off two of the greatest Cowboy Bebop episodes the show would produce, we get a much more conventional episode, featuring the crew searching for a bounty-head-of-the-week.  At first glance, it is nothing more than a return to the episodic nature of the series, and, in my opinion, is a kind of weak entry.  Maybe it’s because it comes right after the brilliant “Jupiter Jazz,” but “Bohemian...

The Best Good TVeets of 2011 →
Good TVeets is a daily list of hilarious tweets about TV and the entertainment industry, collected by Chris Becker, a film and TV studies professor at Notre Dame.  She collects tweets from film critics, members of the industry, and fans like you and me.*  They tend to mainly praise good TV and snark at bad TV in clever and creative ways.  Like Prof. Becker suggests, I’d highly recommend...

A Christmas Constant →
All this month, The A.V. Club has been doing a feature called TV Club Advent Calendar, examining an episode of TV that features Christmas or a specific Christmas special each day of December.  Today’s entry is “The Constant,” one of my favorite episodes of LOST (heavily featuring two of my favorite characters, Desmond Hume and Daniel Faraday).  Writer Ryan McGee examines how the...

The Rescuers Down Under was one of my favorite movies as a kid, but I feel that it’s been all but forgotten.  It’s never been seen as one of the great Disney movies, and usually when I bring it up, people haven’t heard about it.  I was very interested to see what Doug Walker, the guy who plays the Nostalgia Critic, would say about it in his “Disneycember” feature...

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword: An In-Progress...
I’ve been playing through Skyward Sword, the newest game in The Legend of Zelda series, and I thought I’d say a few things about it.  It is at times both very rewarding and very frustrating, but overall I’m enjoying it. Seeing as how I’m only two dungeons in, this will focus mainly on technical issues.  The most important of which is the control scheme, which is...

Tumbl Thursday?
Does Tumblr have an equivalent to Twitter’s Follow Friday?  Regardless, everyone should be following Samaralex’s Tumblr Raxacoricofallapatorius (double bonus points if you know what show the title refers to).  She is a great photographer, finds cool images from across the web, and is hilarious.  Her posts about her life are always interesting and amusing, and she always makes witty...

The trailer for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit.  It’s been a long time since I’ve seen The Lord of the Rings, but after seeing this, I want to watch all three right now. Also, both Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch, of the BBC’s excellent Sherlock, will be in the movie.  As if there wasn’t enough reason to see it already.

Who Are The "Awful" Characters You Love And Why?
As a follow-up to my previous post, I’m interested in learning why you like to watch characters who are bad people, but don’t like others.  My current theory is that it’s based on charisma.  Ben Linus and Gus Fring are awful people, but fun as hell to watch.  Dennis Reynolds is a total creep, but he makes his sociopathy entertaining and funny.  Omar Little has an almost...
