Girls: For What It’s Worth

I just finished watching the pilot to Lena Dunham and Judd Apatow’s new HBO show Girls, and I’m writing this from a bus stop, on my way to a Death Cab for Cutie concert.* There has been so much said about it online this past week, despite it not airing until last night. Many people have claimed it to be must-watch television while others have said that it should be avoided like the plague. (Some on both sides have made these claims sight unseen, based on Dunham and Apatow’s pedigrees and the show’s premise.) With so much being said by both sides, my additional opinion is probably meaningless. But, for what it’s worth, here it is: Watch the pilot. I don’t care if you don’t like it and never watch another episode. Watch the pilot. I found the show to be a very funny look at people who are struggling to get their lives together, in spite and because of their privileged upbringings. It definitely is not for everyone, but for those of you on the fence, it’s a 30 minute commitment that is worth taking a chance on. (Also, I believe that some of the criticism lodged against it is unfair.) I will definitely continue watching, and I am now very interested in seeing Dunham’s film Tiny Furniture. *Therefore, this isn’t so much a review as an endorsement.
