Intellectual property is big business, as evidenced by this story about fights - both legal and not-so-legal - concerning whether or not Sherlock Holmes belongs in the public domain. One of the “not-so-legal” events? A Holmes scholar being strangled to death with a shoelace before an auction of letters written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
When people turn to fictional characters, it’s often because they want an escape. The stories of these people shelter us from the storm of our daily lives; they save us, if only for a little while. But when we really give in, become invested, let ourselves be vulnerable, something changes. We begin to feel that we know them. It’s no longer just an escape, but part of us, something that makes us who we are.
These characters teach us that incredible adversity can be overcome. That people can love each other forever. That life can be an adventure. That magic can be real. And even if these miracles have never happened to us, we begin to go through life believing that, someday, they could.
If anybody ever tells me that storytelling isn’t important anymore, I’ll show them this post.
So I recognize the Tenth Doctor, Sherlock Holmes, and Harry Potter. Who is the fourth?

Sherlock/Sandman crossover. Had to do this, quite evil of me I know. Sherlocks’ fall didn’t quite go to plan.
“-I’m not blessed, or merciful. I’m just me. I’ve got a job to do, and I do it. Listen: even as we’re talking, I’m there for old and young, innocent and guilty, those who die together and those who die alone. I’m in cars and boats and planes; in hospitals and forests and abattoirs. For some folks death is a release, and for others death is an abomination, a terrible thing. But in the end, I’m there for all of them.”
Death.
(used a ref for Death, will link when I find the picture again in my files)
OH DEAR GOD
Has Neil Gaiman seen this yet? I feel he would appreciate it.
I have now. Thanks to everyone who sent it to me…
When is Sherlock coming back?!

It’s only when I hit the ground
It causes all the grief”Inspired by ‘Falling’ by Florence + The Machine

If you live in Chicago, you should definitely make an effort to see Danny Boyle’s Frankenstein. Filmed at the National Theatre in the UK, Boyle directed Benedict Cumberbatch (of Sherlock) and Johnny Lee Miller in a stage production of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The duo, who switched parts every night, is absolutely fantastic in their roles (I saw Cumberbatch as Frankenstein and Miller as the Creature). The show is thought-provoking, depressing, and at times, darkly funny. This is definitely a can’t-miss.
*Note* The link doesn’t seem to be working. However, the show will be back at the Music Box in July. This link is for the production itself, and is still active.
As much as I don’t want a live action Cowboy Bebop movie, I kind of have to admit that Cumberbatch would probably be a good Spike.
Cowboy Bebop vs Sherlock Holmes
Actual amaze.
I fucking love the internet.
Yes yes yes yes. Except I don’t think their personalities are similar at all.
